OPPORTUNITY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Salary Range $133,000-$175,000

  • Benefits: Medical, dental and vision insurance begin after 90 days from hire date.

  • Retirement Plan:

o   Defined benefit retirement plan: mandatory employee contribution at 3.26%- and 5-year vesting period.

o   Pre-tax retirement saving plan (403 (b)): dollar for dollar employer matching up to 1.5% begins after 90 days from hire date. Employer matching is vested at 20% each year with full vesting after 5 years.

o   Long term disability: benefit of 50% of gross monthly base pay (up to $1,500 a month) after 90 days from hire date and 181 days after the date of disability.

  • Earned Time Off (ETO): 7.69 hours of ETO earned bi-weekly for 0-1 year of service. ETO hours only available to use after 30 days of employment.

  • Holidays: Seven (7) holidays included as part of ETO.

  • Education Reimbursement: Reimbursement for the cost of tuition and books – maximum of $1,500 per fiscal year (July-June). Available to employees who have been employed at least one year.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Development Director supports the mission of Washington Hospital by attracting significant philanthropic support from individual donors. The Director will manage a portfolio of prospects able to make gifts of $10,000 or above. Extensive collaboration with trustees, executive staff, physicians, and others will be expected to ensure that donors are cultivated and solicited thoughtfully and methodically. The Development Director will work closely with the Executive Director on all aspects of major-donor fundraising, including identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, in addition to supporting the Foundation's Grateful Patient, Planned Giving and capital campaign initiatives. The Development Director will be asked to work some evenings and weekends, depending upon donors' wishes and Foundation priorities.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Role reports to Executive Director, Washington Hospital Healthcare Foundation. This position will have no direct reports.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Capital Campaign, Major Giving + Planned Giving

  • Successfully execute the quiet phase, planning, and public phases of a $10M capital campaign to expand the Cancer Center in partnership with CCS Fundraising.

  • Lead capital-campaign fundraising efforts, individually or with support of campaign counsel through strategic planning, administrative preparations, conducting prospect rating exercises, cultivating, and soliciting prospects, and offering excellent donor stewardship.

  • Grow current major-donor fundraising efforts (gifts of $10,000 and up) through direct-mail and email campaigns, prospect research, physician referrals, trustee interactions and business networking

  • Support the growth and day-to-day administration of the Foundation's grateful patient program, which promotes a strategic focus on raising and stewarding funds from grateful patient families who have received care from Washington Hospital.

  • Develop and execute a strategy to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospects who received care from specific service lines and centers of excellence at Washington Hospital (e.g., The Institute for Joint Restoration and Research, neurosurgery).

  • Support the growth of the Foundation's Planned Giving program through regular donor identification, cultivation, and solicitation efforts, including managing stewardship of current Legacy Society members.

Collaboration + Stewardship

  • Support Executive Director in managing relationships with Board of Trustees and Foundation Members.

  • Serve as go-to staff for questions from new or existing members, and in partnership with Executive Director, engage in 1:1 development conversations with each trustee on an annual basis.

  • Work collaboratively with senior leadership to identify Hospital needs for funding that would be most appropriate for major-donor support.

  • Plan cultivation activities that lead prospects to the point of being ready for a solicitation.

  • In partnership with Executive Director and Foundation Team: execute development activities in the Foundation, with the intent to upgrade donors from event-based giving to major giving status. (e.g., special events, quarterly meetings, civic meetings, and other charitable events in the district).

  • Support volunteer leaders by staffing standing committees and drafting minutes for Executive Director's review.

Administration 

  • Develop and implement best-practice protocols for the Foundation's donor database that support the acknowledgment of gifts and enable reporting on progress of the Foundation's major donor program.

  • Establish and cultivate relationships with community members able to make a major gift.

  • Working with volunteer leaders and executive staff, solicit major gifts from prospects.

  • Enrich the quality of the data in the donor database by updating relationships with donors and trustees in the database and documenting contacts and next steps.

COMPETENCIES

  • Capital campaign experience with all campaign phases including feasibility stage, strategy, and implementation

  • Minimum five years' experience in fund development, preferably in healthcare fundraising

  • Proven track record of soliciting and closing gifts and providing thoughtful donor stewardship

  • Ability to leverage the Foundation's prospect research subscription to identify and qualify prospects as major donors

  • Commitment to ensuring that donor intent is maintained when funds are disbursed

  • Demonstrated skill in scaling benefits, named gifts, and visibility for major donors

  • Facility to collaborate with the volunteer leaders of the Foundation to solicit financial support from prospects, whether for first gifts, upgraded gifts, or multi-year pledges.

  • Ability to create compelling cases for support for major donors

  • Very strong follow-up skills to secure gift commitments after solicitations have been made.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Familiarity with Raiser's Edge donor software and strong skills with MS Office Suite

  • Bachelor's Degree required, Master's Degree in philanthropy, business, health services or equivalent, preferred

  • Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) credential preferred
